Fellowship Opportunities

MME graduate students are eligible to apply for various graduate scholarship/fellowship opportunities offered by external agencies such as NSF, DOE and NASA. Specific requirements for each fellowship, including eligibility, deadlines and required materials for submission, are listed below.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), National Science Foundation (NSF)

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
  • Intend to enroll or be enrolled full-time in a research-based graduate degree program in an eligible Field of Study in STEM or STEM education
  • Have never previously accepted a GRFP award
  • If previously offered a GRFP award, have declined by the deadline
  • Have never previously applied to GRFP while enrolled in a graduate degree program
  • Have never earned a doctoral or terminal degree in any field
  • Have never earned a master’s, professional, or bachelor’s-master’s degree in any field, unless (i) returning to graduate study after an interruption of two (2) or more consecutive years immediately preceding the deadline, and; (ii) are not enrolled in a graduate degree program at the application deadline
  • Not be a current NSF employee

NASA Space Technology Research Fellows, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Open only to U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals.
  • Persons who hold permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.
  • Required to be enrolled in their final year of undergraduate studies through the second year of a traditional PhD program.

  • The NDSEG Fellowship lasts for 3 years and pays for full tuition and all mandatory fees; a monthly stipend ($38,400 annually); a $5,000 travel budget over the Fellow’s tenure for professional development; and up to $1,200 a year in health insurance.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Program

Eligibility Guidelines

  • The following are the eligibility requirements for those interested in applying to the DoD NDSEG Fellowship Program:
  • The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals. Dual citizens may apply. (The term “U.S. national” designates a citizen of the United States or a native of a possession of the United States such as American Samoa. It does not refer to a citizen of another country who has applied for U.S. citizenship)
  • Persons who hold permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.

Eligible applicants are required to be enrolled in their final year of undergraduate studies through the second year of a traditional PhD program. See below for a breakout of eligibility criteria:

  • Undergraduate Students (degree must be received prior to the Fellowship Start date)
  • Recent Bachelor’s Degree Recipients
  • Graduate Students (1st year, 2nd year)
  • Recent Master’s Degree Recipients
  • Pre-Doctoral Students (1st year, 2nd year)
  • Dual MD-PHD Students
  • Dual PSYD-PHD Students
  • Applicants who are pursuing a Medical Degree are not eligible for the NDSEG fellowship.
  • Applicants must plan to enroll in a full-time program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education leading to graduate degrees in fields specified in the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) research and development discipline

Applications are encouraged from women, persons with disabilities and minorities, including members of ethnic minority groups such as Native American, African American, Hispanic American, Native Alaskan (Eskimo and Aleut) or Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian).

NDSEG Fellowship Program website

Required Materials for Submission

DoD NDSEG Fellows must meet the following requirements as a condition of their appointment:

  • Enrolled in full-time programs leading to graduate degrees in fields specified in the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) research and development discipline
  • Attending an accredited U.S. institution of higher education
  • Has made satisfactory academic progress toward an advanced degree in one of the science or engineering fields
  • Mandatory attendance to the DoD National NDSEG Fellows Conference within their award term
  • Fellow may not accept simultaneous remuneration from another fellowship; e.g., if an applicant is offered both an NSF and an NDSEG Fellowship, the applicant must choose between the two offers.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (SGRF) Program, Department of Energy

Eligibility Guidelines

Graduate students currently pursuing Ph.D. degrees in areas of physics, chemistry, material sciences, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, computer or computational sciences, or specific areas of environmental sciences that are aligned with the mission of the Office of Science are eligible to apply for the supplemental research awards provided by the SCGSR program. Eligible graduate students must apply online.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Minimum Age and U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency
  • Academic Status
  • Enrollment in a Qualified Graduate Program
  • Graduate Research aligned with DOE Office of Science Research Programs
  • Establishment of a Collaborating DOE Laboratory Scientist

In addition:

  • Applicants are eligible to submit only one application per award cycle.
  • An application whose SCGSR research proposal has the same scope as that of a previously awarded SCGSR application will not be considered.
  • Individuals who meet all other eligibility requirements are eligible to receive more than one SCGSR award during the graduate education provided that the cumulative total of the award periods for all SCGSR awards do not exceed 12 months.
  • If a current SCGSR Awardee is successful in competing for a new SCGSR award, the Awardee must successfully complete the current award and fulfill all their obligations and award terms and conditions associated with that award before the award start date of the new award to be eligible to receive that award.
  • For applicants who have participated in WDTS’ laboratory based undergraduate programs, the applicants must have successfully completed their participation in those programs by fulfilling all the programs’ requirements before they could be considered for a SCGSR award.

The SCGSR Program Application Requirements Include:

All applications to the SCGSR program must be completed through the online application system.

  • Applicants should create an account on the SCGSR online application system well before the application deadline and become familiar with the application information requested.
  • The online application system will guide applicants through the application requirements.
  • Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered for evaluation and placement.
  • Materials uploaded into the online application system will provide the sole basis for evaluation. It is recommended that the applicant review the Application Evaluation and Selection prior to completing the application.
  • Submitted official transcripts must have all Social Security numbers and/or dates of birth redacted or removed (blanked out, blackened out, made non-visible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system. These items are considered protected PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and must not be shared. Any applications found to contain PII in the form of Social Security numbers and/or dates of birth will be deemed non-compliant and will not be considered.

Computational Sciences Graduate Fellowship (CSGF)

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Undergraduate seniors
  • Applicants with no more than B.S. or B.A. degrees who are not enrolled in graduate school
  • First-year graduate students (M.S. degree or Ph.D. students without an M.S. degree)
  • Enrolled M.S. degree students beyond their first year provided that they plan full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. at: 1) a different academic institution, OR 2) in a different academic department
  • Applicants with no more than M.S. degrees who are not currently enrolled AND who will not have been enrolled in graduate school for two years prior to resuming graduate studies
  • First-year Ph.D. students with an M.S. degree provided that they 1) completed the M.S. degree within two years at a different academic institution, 2) completed the M.S. degree within two years in a different academic department, OR 3) prior to current enrollment, they had not been enrolled in graduate school for at least two years

Required Materials for Submission

  • 16 individual sections through online application. Transcripts: Request an official transcript from each university or college you have attended, including your current fall transcript. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the university, either via mail or through an e-transcript system. Transcripts sent by an applicant will not be accepted regardless of delivery method.
  • PRA: If you are a Permanent Resident Alien (PRA), you must send a copy of the front and back of your PRA card to the Krell Institute as a requirement of the application.
  • References: We recommend that you use the link within our online system to notify references of your request for letters. The system will send your references an email with a link to our online system where they can submit a letter. Alternatively, you can download either a PDF or MSWord version of the reference form for their use.
  • Program of Study: Generate your Program of Study (POS) with your graduate advisor’s assistance. If you cannot get a graduate advisor at your preferred institution to review your POS, ask your current advisor to help you generate and approve the proposed POS.
  • You will be required to check a box on the final submission page that confirms that both you and your advisor approve of the POS before you are able to press the “Final Submission” button. An email will be sent to your advisor, once you submit your application, with the list of submitted coursework. If you are chosen for a fellowship, you and your advisor will be asked to sign the POS and return it to the Krell Institute.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLFE) Program

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8
  • At time of application, be currently enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a STEM program at an accredited college or university at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral level.
  • Must be at least a college sophomore at the time of application. Students pursuing an Associate’s degree are eligible to apply if transferring to pursue a Bachelor’s degree for fall 2020.
    Be available to participate in the full 10-week program

NASA Fellowship Activity

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or national

  • Be enrolled in Masters of PhD by Semptember 1st or application year
  • Research in NASA STEM-related field
  • Plans to be enrolled in program for duration of award

Eligibility Guidelines

  • Pursuing a technical degree directly related to space technology
  • U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent resident aliens of the U.S.
  • Have or will have a bachelor’s degree prior to the fall 2020 term
  • Are or will be enrolled in a full-time master’s or doctoral degree program at an accredited U.S. university
  • If seeking support in pursuit of a master’s degree, require at least 1 full year of support from fall 2020
  • If seeking support in pursuit of a doctoral degree, require at least 2 full years of support from fall 2020
